Look before you adjust

Check the indicated water level, whether the equipment is operating as expected, and what the newest leaves look like. Note unusual smells, debris or visible changes. A yellow leaf is not enough information to select a treatment: record the pattern and check the growing conditions first.

Keep light out of the reservoir

Light reaching nutrient-rich water can encourage algae. Keep the reservoir lid and unused-site covers in place where the system calls for them. If green growth appears, check for exposed water or gaps rather than immediately adding an algicide to an edible-crop system.

Reset between growing cycles

Remove old plant material and clean the reusable parts following the manufacturer’s instructions. Cleaning away debris and sanitizing are different steps. Use only products suitable for the equipment and intended purpose, with the label’s directions. Do not improvise a chemical mixture or treat routine cleaning as a guarantee against every pest or disease.
